There are many types of mediators advertising their services. The Divorce Mediation Center of Suffolk only uses matrimonial attorneys with five or more years of experience. Each has completed forty hours of mediation training, making them eligible to be a member of the Academy of Family Mediators.

Although the mediator is an attorney, their role in the mediation is not as an attorney but as an impartial unbiased mediator. They bring all of their experience as an attorney to the mediation. Since (he or she) is acting as a mediator, they cannot and will not represent either party individually.
